I have had a call off someone who says they are from Virgin media on 08001836417? 

I just want to confirm this is genuine and not a scam?

Hopefully that is so, but you should be aware that you can't always rely on CLID (the incoming number shown on the handset or by calling 1471) because it is trivially easy for criminals to spoof.
