Is anyone else receiving calls on their mobile or land line from 0800 052 1251 claiming to be virgin media?  I’m not sure if this is spam or not and don’t want to take the chance

Sadly 0800 052 1251 does appear to be a Virgin Media offshore sales team.

Probably best, always remember though that it is trivially easy to 'spoof' a number, so a professional scammer operation from, say India or Russia, could could pretend that they are coming from that number. Best thing if you do get such a call, is absolutely not to give any information away - if the caller already knows your name (OK that's fairly easy to find out), and VM account details, date and amount of direct debit, what package you are on etc., then chances are that it is a genuine call from VM trying to sell you something. If they ask you for information to 'confirm your identity', up goes the red flag and you put the phone down - because you could, literally be taking to anyone!

So in your case, you aren't interested in any upgrades so yes, just keep ignoring the calls - do you have the facility to block the number on your phone? Alternatively if you were to log into the my.vieginmedia.com website, there is an option in there somewhere to opt out of marketing calls, it does take uptown 30 days to take effect, but if you were to do so and still get genuine calls from VM, then they are legally in hot water. Of course it won't do anything about the scammers who are acting illegally anyway, but a start.

If you sign into My Virgin Media  then Account Settings > Marketing preferences,  you can untick the check box which stops VM contacting you via phone, text message, post and email. Be sure to scroll down and click on Save Changes. It takes up  to 28 days to take effect. This won't however prevent mailshots to "the householder"

If you have a mobile or sim with VM then you would also have to turn of the marketing in the mobile account by logging into

 https://mobile.virginmedia.com/ecare/login

My Mobile> My Preferences > marketing

Again that takes up to 28 days to process.
