Fake recorded calls from Technical Department

This is a new variation on the 'we need to check your internet' scam. After a plethora of phone calls last week from humans claiming to be from Virgin Media I today picked up the phone to a recorded message telling me there is a problem with my router and they will soon be turning off my internet so that the router can be changed, and to press 1 to speak to the Technical Team to arrange this. Of course I did not press 1, it will probably cost me dearly, and then have to deal with the lying human if by any chance it does take me through. Masked number, came through as 01555 427780

Re: Fake recorded calls from Technical Department

Hello stigemat

Thanks for your pot

They are rife right now calling everyone on different providers

As soon as a number gets blocked they can easily spoof another number and start

again

Re: Fake recorded calls from Technical Department

Got a call today from a different 01555 number. Claimed my internet was going to be disconnected within 4 hours and they needed to do something to my router. Checking on the net I can find at least four different 01555 numbers doing exactly the same scam. Looks like they've got hold of a block of numbers.

Goes back a quite a long time:

Some of the links no longer work.

Re: Fake recorded calls from Technical Department

There's lots of places to report these scammers. It's a shame there's nowhere that actually does anything about them. What's needed is arrests. I guess most of them are in India. Need an arrangement with the Indian police to go kick some doors in.

This does happen.  This is a link to a report of a high profile raid last year:
