I'm trying to plug the cable provided into the wall socket in my flat (which says to push, not screw in) however while the connections match, the connector on the wall recedes into the wall when I push it and so I can't plug it in. Is this meant to happen?

No, it's not. 

Wait here a day or two for a VM Mod to arrange a technician to fix this.
