I've tried phoning virgin to cancel, or possibly stay if they can look at reducing my bill, but I've been unable to contact them by phone due to the long waiting times, always goes over an hour when I have to give up.
Is there anyway to get through to their cancellation or retention team direct without having an unknown wait on the phone?

You can cancel by writing to the address in your contract. Use recorded delivery for evidence.
If you want to negotiate a lower price you will have to use the phone "thinking of leaving us" option.
