I've just received my new v6 tv box, but does it actually need ethernet to initially set it up or will it do it just on wifi. It's gone through the initial stages but at the end where it says verifying it says connection problem.

You need to get the V6 TV box activated.
Hub Activation number on 0800 953 9500
Then go into the V6 settings and connect to your Wi-Fi, it will not do it automatically.
If you can use an ethernet cable between the Hub and V6.
