How long on average does it take for the external work to get started for my broadband? Also is there a way to track this?

You won't get a useful average from the topics on here because the ones on here are typically about the 'problem' installations which can drag on for weeks or months.
Unfortunately there is no means to track your installation (if you mean 'online'). You can ring the pre-installation team on 0800 052 1734 for info but the dates they tell you may well be 'subject to change'.
