RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

Hi, We have 350MB connection (increasing to 500MB in a couple of weeks) and we have been having some drop outs of our Virgin Media connection recently, not too often and I attributed it to maybe a more regional issue, but upon checking the log on the Super Hub 3.0 I have seen these errors:

Re: RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

Those levels don't seem quite right to me, and combined with the Post RS Errors, tells me something is a miss.

When was the last time you rebooted the router? It might be able to obtain a more stable connection if it's forced to retry from scratch.

I'd turn it off for a few minutes using the switch at the back and then back on again. Give it 5 minutes to stabilise and then post back if you have any more problems.

Re: RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

Hi Z92 and thanks for the reply.

It was rebooted a couple of days ago as the internet connection dropped to unusable. The white light was stable on the router but no internet connection.

We had problems initially when we had virgin installed. We had the whole package of all 3 services but the signal on the TV was so rubbish, hardly any of the channels worked. After months of frustration and engineers that never turned up, they eventually told me that the council need to dig up the road to pull a new cable. Anyway, it never happened. I've since moved my TV to Sky and the BB has been fine, or so it seems lol....

I will try powering off for 5 mins though.

What doesn't look right about the levels?

Re: RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

Well for example, your downstream levels should be as close as possible to zero, so if it was -7 or +7 dBmV I'd say they were fine. If it was -10 but you had no problems then it's worth just keeping an eye on, but -18 is out of spec and just asking for problems. This is backed up by the SNR column which is showing low signal to noise ratio for those channels.

It might be worthwhile checking if you have an attenuator in your cable and possibly removing this to see if it improves things, or if you no longer need the splitter because you have only broadband then removing this might also help, depends how much you like to tinker and mess with things 🙂 but the best solution is to request an engineer as they have the proper equipment to test the levels and can modify in the cabinet.

Re: RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

I would go a bit further than Z92, levels should be between -6 and +10.  Also your upstream is too high at 51, that needs to come down to around 38 to 48 or so. The PostRS errors are indicative of noise on the circuit. Check all connections from outside to in and tighten any loose ones. Other than that if they keep increasing after a reboot an engineer will need to fix.

Re: RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

In my view those power levels are horrendous and possibly show bad connections or cable. Low downstream and high upstream mean too low a signal level, sometimes the user needs moving to another tap on the street cabinet or cable replaced.

Re: RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

Thanks everyone for you input so far.

I'll look at checking all the connections today and report back.

What's the best process for getting hold of an engineer if required? Will some one from VM be able to sort that through here or am I going to have to make the dreaded phone call?

Re: RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

So I have checked all the connections and I have also removed the splitter that was installed in the box on the outside of the house as the other cable attached to the splitter for the bedroom is not connected to anything, so the cabinet labelled cable coming to the house is now directly connected to the router.

Here are the latest logs:

Do these levels look any better or should I still be looking to get an engineer out?

Re: RCS Partial Service & No Ranging Response received

Your downstream power levels are too low, I’d get at tech to come and sort this out, the upstream is better.
