Just upgrading to 1gig and not receiving expected speeds

Just waited 58 minutes listening to 'pop' music and the 'other person has cleared'

Received and installed new Hub 4.0. Moved things around (cancelled TV) but replaced all cables with cable off the roll (tested, including for loopbacks). Set my network card from Auto-negotiation to 1Gbps full duplex and 'other' troubleshooting and settings changes. I am connected directly over a CAT-5e shielded (~5m long) to the modem (negligible difference using a 0.25m one that came from VM)

Spent a bit of time reading about DOCSIS 3.1, signal levels etc. and cannot seem to increase download from ~480Mbps. Upstream is 'ok'.

Since I had full TV, now no longer, I used the same attenuators (direction VM > Hub 4.0):

  • a wideband 6dB (5-1006MHz) attenuator
  • a Forward path 3dB (FLD5W-65-860-FPA-3) attenuator

I did not change the connection to the 'box' nor the splitter. Just unplugged the hardware.

Would very much prefer to stay online - I performed the 'change' at 0230 today (29/11/2020) so as not to displace the kids' connections. I can rework the cables if necessary.

Could you advise?

Sorry. No, I replaced all the ethernet cable. I wouldn't touch that.

Re: Just upgrading to 1gig and not receiving expected speeds

You need to post the downstream Pre and PostRS errors.  Also one of the Downstream power levels is too low at -6.4  Range should be -6 to +10.

Just to add based on previous threads the DOCSIS 3.1 power level had to be adjusted separately in the cabinet.

I did paste these, but via Excel and pasted as a table - cannot scroll horizontally or maybe it trimmed the content. As follows, unedited from the status page:

On the upstream, no t1 - t4 timeouts on all 4 channels.

I was thinking though that I could remove the wideband attenuator to increase the PLC power on ch33, but that might mess with the others, and the upstream. (I just scanned a few of the specs on this stuff as it goes way too deep), or remove the splitter as it's no longer required?

Thanks (and I think the wysiwyg removes th tags among others)

Re: Just upgrading to 1gig and not receiving expected speeds

How would I even organise this (adjustment of power levels in the cabinet) as the phone line clears after an hour on hold? An email? Or should VM see this?

You have three options:

  • Wait for a VM staff member to reply on here (Currently 5 - 7 days).
  • Text VM on 07533 051 809.
  • Phone customer services on 0345 454 1111.
