I had my quick start pack today, but I have an old telewest box in this house as I've just moved into as below. The previous owner had virgin in but had an older router.
its screw connection. I've looked inside the box and it's all that's there.
I've spent all day on the phone getting nowhere as expected with the Virgin customer service. They did in the end promise me an engineer today but no one has come. Now we have to wait until the 21st Dec which is out of the question.
Any ideas before I cancel ?

No you’re not, it’s just not obvious - and far better to ask first than to plough on and hope. All credit to you for a) asking for help when you weren’t sure, and b) admitting that you should possibly have known and being humble about it - hint, don’t beat yourself up about it!
