Nope - They can be wherever the cable will allow - VM can supply longer cables - it is important that it is VM that do supply the cables as they are made to a certain specification!

If you were to use your own cable - you could inadvertently create noise on your segment that would effect everyone's broadband.

Re: How far can the modem be placed from entry point

You've been told tripe, it can be as far as is needed, but potentially that affects the impedance of your hub's connection to the network, and needs to be done by a VM technician.  If you just buy some cable yourself, then (regardless of supplier promises) that may not be the very high grade required for cable internet, so in addition to the risk of beggaring up the power levels you may introduce noise to the network, affecting speed and reliability for yourself and other customers near you.  If this is an unsatisfactory first install, then wait and see if the forum staff can sort things out, failing that raise a formal complaint (online, form in My Virgin Media).  If it's a change and you've been with VM for a while, you're looking at a £99 "non-fault call out" charge.

You do not say if it’s a new install, if so no charge.

If it's a quickstart installation then call staff will typically say 1 meter, but if you request engineer installation instead it can be fitted anywhere.

So if the entry point isn't where you want it, request an engineer installation.

Re: How far can the modem be placed from entry point

Thanks for your post and welcome to the Community Forums, Yorkie9,

One meter is only a recommendation, however as everyone in the thread has advised it can be longer but in a lot of DIY setups it isn't recommended due to poor cabling.

Cheers,

Corey C
