Help with connecting TP Link Router

tomtomtomtom
Tuning in

Hello, hoping somone can help

I bought a TP LINK AC2100 Router and would like to set this up.

I've been on 192.168.1.1 and set the Virgin router into Modem Mode (Residential Gateway Function - Disabled)

Im now trying to set my TP Link up but it keep saying no internet connection.

In the internet connection setup, TP link has detected a PPPOE connection - is this right? I can't change this.

In the same setup menu, TP link is also asking me for a username and password - what is this username and password. I have tried inputting 'admin' and the number that is found on the back of the virgin modem but it's not working. I can't think what else this would be

Any help at all would be amazing, been at this for days - driving me insane.

You need to do it this way

Switch on and set up your own router (in its settings) with the WAN port set to be in Dynamic/Automatic IP or DHCP (& Nat) mode, it may be pre-set that way anyway. Then, disconnect all cables from your new router and switch off and unplug it. Then, put the VM Hub into modem mode
https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-hub-modem-mode
and wait for the base light to turn magenta/purple (on a Hub3 - but not on a Hub4!).

Once it’s in modem mode, the VM hub “MUST” then be powered off.

Switch your router on now and make sure it’s fully initialised (leave 5-10 min) and then put in the ethernet cable from its WAN port to the VM hub (any port will do).

NOW… power up the VM hub and wait 5-10 minutes for The Hub to initialise and and you should get a connection.

You might also set the SSID and key/password on the new router/Mesh to match that on the HUB so when you swap over, all your wireless devices should just connect automatically.

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi) Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

Hi John,

thanks for much.

does the wan port on the Virgin or tp link router need to be set to dhcp, or both?

Is that done on 192.168.1.1 or the tp Link equivalent?

The TP-Link needs WAN port setting to DHCP mode - your Hub will be in modem mode. I dont think the Hub needs any other changes

I think the address you posted is that of the TP-Link which is how you can access it 's settings - as your Hub is always 192.168.0.1

Another thought - is that model not a VDSL/ADSL router ?

If so I am not sure if it can be used on a VM Cable connection - what does its info/tech specs say about that - may need to change some other settings .

Yes this model is a VDSL/ADSL modem, have I purchased the wrong one?

if so, what do I need to be getting?

Someone else need to comment as to whether it can be tweaked to be used. If not... for about the same price this proper Cable router would be good...

Good call John, that model though, uses the LAN4 port as a ‘secondary’ WAN connection so the OP will need to connect that to the VM hub and configure it accordingly - I believe that out of the box, that port is a LAN port.

John

I’m slightly confused, the link you posted is the same one I have AC2100.

any other suggestions on what I could get to replace the one I have

See message 7

But try John's fix in message 8 first - use the LAN 4 port as the WAN port - and see if that works before swapping.
