I've received my Quickstart kit but the cable doesn't connect to the wall socket. I've tried an adaptor but this hasn't worked either. Is there a specific type of adaptor/connector I need?

That is an old screw type connector. You will have a new push type connector but you should still be able to connect them. Insert the push connector with a firm push.
