Basic broadband connection 70% web and email: 10%

I’ve got we weird one for you. I have two devices connected to virgin router over WiFi.

1. An iPhone.
Speedtest  results a little volatile and below normal.

Virgin Media Status Check was reporting ‘an issue with failed circuit n your area, BH179AU Yesterdy but seems to have been cleared.

2. MacBook OSX Catalina
Speedtest results volatile and below normal but still over 100mbps download.

Network Preferences:

WiFi Green. (I have tried switching between Frequencies 24 vs 50 - no change)
Ethernet. (I have a second wired connection) Green.

ping google.com

Almost all ‘high level’ protocol service are either dead (0%) - AppStore, Googledrive, Dopbox or working in fits and starts (10%) http, email imap,

This device is suffering from chronic and at time accuse problem manifesting as ‘beach balling’ - extremely unresponsive with resources being consumed by system processes And/or ‘kernel panics’ causing sudden shut down at a frequency of up to 3 times per hour. However these underlying issues have never directly effected, or been effected by issues with internet connection.

any idea how to debug/diagnose this kind of selective internet issue on Mac. 🌈🌈🤸🏼‍♂️🤸🏼‍♂️

Welcome to the Trials & Tribulations of Wi-Fi

The problem with Wi-Fi is that it can be brilliant at breakfast time and useless by lunchtime and you haven't changed anything, BUT, something, somewhere has changed, then you can spend hours and even days trying to find a fix for something that can be totally out of your control.

If you remove all the internal walls, electronic and electrical devices, metallic pipes and conduits and wrap the whole building in a thick lead shield you will have a good chance of getting decent Wi-Fi from a VM Hub.

Many people have accepted that the VM Wi-Fi is poor and have purchased third party equipment that is much, much more powerful than the VM supplied kit and once set up have wondered why they waited for so long.

Re: Basic broadband connection 70% web and email: 10%

The easiest way to diagnose is to use Amazon. Order a decent WiFi router, put the Virgin box into modem mode and plug it in. Restart your mac and connect to the new WiFi. This will cure over 90% of strange and weird WiFi faults. If it doesn't, send it back to Amazon as a return and get your money back.

Alternatively, you can spend hours trying to "fix" the problems you are having, but unless you can cable your mac to the router, it will likely still be intermittent.
