Wifi restarts every couple of hours.

Hi all,

My Hub3 restarts the wifi every few hours dropping all connected devices.  Broadband appears to be up and only the solid green wifi light comes on when the wifi drops.  The solid white light stays on all the time.

I've spoken to Virign support who have said its because my devices were only connecting on 2.4 rather than 5.  I reset default on device and virign media support chap has said 2.4 falls over with to many connections and to balance across both 2.4 and 5 which i have now done.

Unfortunately error still occurring, see logs below.  Currently virgin support line saying i should call back later 😉 they are too busy.

Re: Wifi restarts every couple of hours.

Have you only 10 down channels - where are the other 14 ?

Do you mean that you have renamed the SSID's of the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to separate them. If not do so and at the same time switch off "channel optimisation"

Re: Wifi restarts every couple of hours.

Thanks John, I ran out of space in the post so deleted some lines, reposted below:

I have renamed SSID's and channel optimization is disabled.

Re: Wifi restarts every couple of hours.

All stats are good. Looking like it may just be a wifi issue. Can you connect a laptop or computer directly to the Hub by a Cat5e/6/7 ethernet cable and see if that maintains connectivity ok at the same time as the wifi ones drop out.

If it does - the best way of "curing" such a wifi issue is to get your own better quality wireless equipment

Re: Wifi restarts every couple of hours.

Thanks John,

I'll connect directly see if both ethernet and wifi drop at the same time.  My guess is the ethernet will be fine.

If I was to purchase a wifi device could you suggest a model?  I see prices vary from £50 up to several hundred.

Much appreciated.

Re: Wifi restarts every couple of hours.

Do you want a Rolls Royce or a Ford Fiesta 🙂

And it depends on the size, layout construction of your property, your ability to run ethernet cables (or not) and of course budget.

Options are....
(1) A Mesh System, (2) A Wireless router, (3) A Wireless access point or (4) A combination of (2) & (3).

I would say a good Mesh will be the best/simplest/most flexible for most average users.

A Triband system is better for the "backhaul" and for users on high speed packages and umpteen simultaneous connections. Wifi6 would be good if your wifi devices are WiFi6 capable - mine are.

But these may be overkill for your needs
