Wifi Adapter - suggestions..?

Hiya,

I own an eight-year-old Toshiba laptop. It performs really well, with no issues bar one! The WiFi card.

I have 350mb fibre, and I'm only able to get 20mb download on WiFi, and up to 70mb wired. I'm looking for suggestions/recommendations on WiFi adapters or replacing the WiFi card, please? I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds, but the one that was recommended was £18 on Amazon, and I'm not convinced this will be quite what it makes itself out to be.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Steve

Re: Wifi Adapter - suggestions..?

are you talking about replacing the internal wifi card?
what spec does the laptop support?

honestly though, an 8 year old laptop, you are going to be seriously restricted in terms of what you can actually use. internally you are probably screwed, so you'll be looking at USB external devices.

is it USB2 or USB3?

personally i'd be inclined to replace the laptop.

You want an AC WiFi USB adaptor like this:

TP-LINK AC1300 MU-MIMO USB 3.0 Wi-Fi Adapter, Super Fast Mini Dual Band 5 GHz Wireless Dongle for PC, Desktop and Laptop, Supports Windows 10/8.1/8/7/XP, Mac OS 10.9-10.13 (Archer T3U) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07LGMD97Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_358OFbB3E78FV

Re: Wifi Adapter - suggestions..?

I've got USB 2 and 3 available.

I'm thinking internally will be a no go, so a USB adapter for now until I get a new machine.

Re: Wifi Adapter - suggestions..?

an 8 year old laptop has USB3? i'm surprised by that, but that's the route to go down.
avoid USB2 devices.

USB 3.0 was released in 2010

Re: Wifi Adapter - suggestions..?

only one USB 3 slot. I paid a fair bit back then for a quality machine, and gutted it's coming to end of life.

maybe so, but it's surprising to see it in laptops of that vintage.

It is nowhere near end of life.

Have a look at installing Linux Mint or Linux Puppy
