WiFi keeps dropping

Hi, I seem to be having issues which have started over the last couple of months where my devices with WiFi connections keeps losing connectivity to the network/Internet.  They maintain a strong connection to the wireless network, they just lose local network and Internet connectivity.  This is affecting both laptops and iPhone/iPads.  Sometimes time will heal this problem, but I have to reboot the router a few times now.  Looking at the other posts on here I can see I am now the only person suffering this issue.

I have tried looking through the support pages on the VM website but can only see guides blaming placement of the router/interference as a cause for this.  Nothing has changed or moved within my house.  There have been issues where my hard wired devices have lost Internet, but that was down to localised outages rather than router issues.

Re: WiFi keeps dropping

There’s no blaming of interference and nothing has to have changed in your house to affect WiFi - anything surrounding can have an effect including neighbours.

When the wifi drops do all devices drop at the same time along with the wired devices?

Re: WiFi keeps dropping

Hi Gary.  I live in a detached house with no strong wireless broadcasting nearby.  From what I can tell there are no strong local EM sources in the house, such as microwaves or cordless phones.  All wireless devices will keep their Wi-Fi connection but lose their network connectivity, like they have a security profile attached.  I am unable to ping the router for instance but retain a strong signal.  The hardwired PC remains connected.  This started happening from early March and is getting progressively worse.

I have done a factory reset on the router to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks, Chris.

Re: WiFi keeps dropping

If the wired PC is unaffected and only wifi drops out - then its time to consider getting your own better quality wireless equipment - than that present in the Hub3.

Re: WiFi keeps dropping

I was starting to reach that conclusion too.  My contract is up soon so I will allow their retentions department make the decision for me 😀

Is it worthwhile taking a punt on turning Smart Wifi off to prevent it from channel hopping?

Re: WiFi keeps dropping

Yes do this.....

Advanced>wireless>smart wifi - tick the disable “channel optimisation” box and save settings. Then, go to advanced>wireless>security, rename the 2.4 & 5 GHz network ssid's. Just change 'em to whatever you like and something that will differentiate them (e.g - xxxxx2 & xxxxx5) -- use the same password if you like, Then, apply settings and restart the Hub. Your 2 wifi networks will now be clearly separated - and you can then select the network you want to connect to individually from the "available networks" list on each device.
Note all your wifi devices will need re-connecting to the new SSID's and passwords.
5 GHz is usually better and subject to less interference (and is better for iDevices ) than the 2.4 one - although this one has the better "range" and some older/cheaper/dumber devices can only use this one.
You should also use a wifi analyser App to check which 2.4 channels are being heavily used around you and move yours to one of numbers 1,6,11 that is least so.
See if that helps - you will lose any “seamless roaming” benefits but it may not matter and you can always change the settings back or do a "factory reset" if you prefer the way it was - or it doesn’t help.

But then just get your own wireless kit - it will work with any BB provider and you will be free of all their poor wifi kit.

Re: WiFi keeps dropping

Yes that should be always off.

And also look at running in Modem Mode with a better router
