Unstable BQM

Hiya,

First post so hopefully I'm doing this properly!

After some tinkering with the Hub3 (it kept overheating in wireless mode, even when left in lots of space, in a cool area, upright - I've got 14 devices).

I decided to put it in modem mode and hook up my own router; and whilst the experience is better, there's a lot of lag in webpage loading. My BQM is all over the place with spikes and dropped packets, and it makes gaming and Netflix streaming basically impossible at the same time. As soon as both are running, Netflix cuts out, or the game ping hits 300ms+ (to EU servers).

My line stats look good:

Re: Unstable BQM

Can you post a 'Live Link' to your BQM please.

Instructions for posting BQM Link

Under your BQM graph are two links in red.

Click the lower link (Share Live Graph) then click generate.

Copy the text in the Direct Link box, beware, there may be more text than you can see.

On here click the Link icon (2 links chain to the left of the camera icon)

In the URL box paste the link you copied and in the ‘text to display’ box write My BQM then click OK - you can post the link straight away.

Re: Unstable BQM

Your Hub data is looking good.

Your Network log is showing that the Hub was struggling to make a connection at 08:56 / 08:57 on 23 Oct.

Your >> BQM << is showing quite a bit of latency but nothing really bad. I take it the red band at just before 13:00 was a power off reboot ?

What is your contracted speed ?

What speed do you get at >> speedtest.net << with a direct connection using a Cat 5E/6 cable between the Hub in Router Mode and a 1Gbs capable Pc/Mac/Chromebook and no other devices connected ?

Re: Unstable BQM

My package is M200.

The red band was a manual power-off - was hoping there might be an overheating issue, but the lag spikes came back even after it cooled.

On Speedtest I get 228 down and 19.5meg up. The issue isn't speed, it's unfortunately varying latency.

Re: Unstable BQM

The BQM looks like a nasty and unreliable connection.  The prevalence of channel loss errors in the Network log proves that's going on, but with so many events in a couple of minutes it is difficult to show that's an ongoing connection fault, although given the BQM that could be the case.

Leave it 24 hours, and then repost the Network log to see what that's showing.  If you have a period of obvious poor performance, I suggest stopping what you're then doing and copying the Downstream and Upstream data at that point in time, then repost those when convenient (and tell us what time they were taken).

I've left it for 3 days and whilst there's no new Network Logs, the BQM is still all over the place 😞

Re: Unstable BQM

I'm afraid I'm stumped.  Doesn't look like over-utilisation, power and SNR levels seem fine, network log isn't showing anything obvious to my (untrained) eyes.  But the BQM shows the poor latency problem you describe.

You could try phoning it in, but I'm willing to bet a fiver that will not have a productive outcome - the crummy scripts the offshore agents use don't seem to cover latency issues, and other than speed seem to be founded on performance standards relevant to a 1990 dial up connection.

Which leaves two other options:

1) Wait for the forum staff  to comment and advise.  This could possibly take a few days as they seem to be utterly swamped at the moment.

2) Start to consider options for a different ISP.  That depends on whether you're in a fixed term contract, the Openreach options available to you, and the balance of your need between bandwidth and latency.
