You normally cannot go wrong with Asus…

ASUS RT-AX55 (AX1800) Dual Band WiFi 6 Extendable Router, Subscription-free Network Security, Instant Guard, Parental Controls, Built-in VPN, AiMesh Compatible, Gaming & Streaming, Smart Home https://amzn.eu/d/2cj4fvD

Hub 5 Modem Mode, Asus XT8
My Broadband Ping - Gig1 Modem Mode

I've been happy with my TP-Link for the last 3 years! - A doddle to set up and configure and very reliable!

Agree, an Asus that is compatible with Merlin's firmware (he is overseen by Asus and they take features and integrate into stock firmware eventually).

Some high end models now have VLAN support as well as being able to isolate Wifi clients from each other and wired resources. Amazon often do deals on Prime days and other events. Being able to log all URLS devices request and direct speed tests from router to WAN are also on most modern AX models (AC models are legacy). Fairly decent lifecycle of several years for firmware updates and regular firmware updates too.

The newest high end model GT-BE98 coming out later this year (but expensive like £450-£500 most likely) has 10gb ports on it and WiFi 7 and fast processor. Not for everyone though.

My concern is the internet speed being capped, i read on a couple of other forums that using an external router and putting the Virgin Media router into modem mode, capped the speed and most people returned to there Virgin router.

My only reason for switching is cannot get my wifi bulbs to pair with either hub3 or hub5, which quite frankly is joke in this day and age. I have never had an issue before not even with Virgins own business hub (https://www.virginmediabusiness.co.uk/help-and-advice/products-and-services/hitron-router-guide/)

Im shocked im have so many issues.

"putting the Virgin Media router into modem mode, capped the speed"
Totally untrue. I use a UniFi UDM-Pro router and WAPs and get full 1100/55 using a Hub5.

I have never used any VM hub in modem mode.

I suggest that's nonsense - there should be no speed capping.  I get full speed using my hub 3 in modem mode with a D Link DIR-882 which has been fine.  If some users have had 'speed capping' I suspect they have some sort of QoS rule enabled limiting the speed to certain devices or prioritising traffic types.  Simply turn off QoS or adjust the settings.

I suspect a typo from Tudor - I guess he meant to say he has always used modem mode and never router mode.
