Third party router is best?

I know this will have been asked before but I'm struggling to find information about it. I've recently moved to VM, in fact got the router a month ago and haven't even set it up, so at this point don't even know if it's working... To cut a long story short, home network was subject to a network attack with last ISP and they did nothing to help. I want to try and avoid that this time by using a router that can be configured to use VPN and has a more secure firewall (I'm thinking of getting a hardware FW or creating my own). Does anyone have a recommendation for a router that would be more secure and compatible with VM? It's a hub5 I have. Thanks.

I use Ubiquiti kit, their router, a UDM-Pro, is a good firewall with lots of configuration options and lots of stats. It is only a router so I have Wireless Access Points for WiFi.
