Slow Ethernet through hub 4

Eddie12341
Tuning in

had 1 gig installed yesterday

getting 1128 mbps to the hub4 however only getting consistent 150 mbps through any Ethernet ports

New confirmed good cables are the same.  Connects directly to the hub the same.  Every device tested provides the same 150 mbs Ethernet connection

multiple notebooks tested and confirmed that peer to peer they received 1 gig Ethernet connection so this rules out windows and the cables.  150mbs on pc, Mac, Xbox (2 versions)  and PlayStations.  Cat 5e and cat6 cables tested

warm reset hub   Hard reset hub. The same 150 mbs Ethernet connection. Don’t think it’s a cable issue because getting full speed to the hub so I’m thinking a potential hub problem

also I signed up for 1 gig. I believe I should have received a hub 5 as these are the standard with 1 gig connections from the 1st September

Can you do this
_____________

As you expect >100Mbps then connect a 1GB enabled computer/laptop, with up to date drivers, via a NEW and working Cat5e/6a ethernet cable, directly to the Hub which you have put into “modem mode” (https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-hub-modem-mode ). This ensures that NO other devices are connected

Test speeds at https://speedtest.samknows.com/ - try on 2 different browsers as Chrome sometimes gives odd results.

If they are still low – boot your device into Windows safe+networking mode - to disable any potentially interfering software - and try again.

There are many posts on here (I have a list of ~30!) where QoS software, anti-virus, unknown/flaky software, old network card drivers, corrupted browsers, bad cables or other connected devices are limiting speeds on tests.

Report back what that gets.

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi) Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's & TP-Link Archer C64 WAP. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

The cake is a lie.😋

So…..

brand new cat 6 cable

router set to modem mode

3 different devices tested one at a time on all 4 hub Ethernet ports max speed 170 mbs on all 4 devices

when I log into the router it tells me there are no Ethernet devices connected at any point

Hey Eddie12341, thank you for reaching out and I am sorry you are having some issues with your connection.

I can see from outside you have a engineer due to come out to resolve this issues.

Please can you keep me updated on how this goes. Thanks

New around here?

Issue hasn’t been resolved

Because I’m getting full speed to the router the engineer said it was working fine however even when he did his speed tests on 3 different computers attached directly to the modem using Virgins own Ethernet cables the results were exactly the same - he couldn’t give me an answer why. Now while I agree his tests did show full speed to the hub it’s of no help when I’m only getting max 10% through Ethernet directly to the router

The fact that wifi is working fine isn’t much help

To be perfectly honest I’m not sure where to go from here.  Obviously from the number of posts about this it seems there is an inerrant problem and yes some of these can be put down to windows however it doesn’t explain why non windows devices are the exact same

unfortunately he didn’t test another hub to rule they out. Apparently because it’s getting full speed to the hub then there isn’t a problem as far as he’s concerned but when you put the hub into modem mode.  Remove every cable apart from one Ethernet cable to one Ethernet device and it still maxes out at 150 meg consistently then there is an issue somewhere and if it’s not a windows device then you can’t say it’s windows or cabling issue causing it. And strangely it’s every single device windows and Non windows even with virgins own cat 6 cables they all max out at pretty much the exact same speed. It’s almost like the hub is throttling the speed

Hi @Eddie12341,

We've been asked by our support team to clarify whether you have tried replacing the Cat6 cable to rule out that being the issue? I know you mentioned it's brand new, but not if it was to replace another.

If not, please can you try that and then run a speed test by connecting to Ethernet Port 1 and share a screenshot of the https://speedtest.net result, along with the make/model of the device you're running the test on. A PC/laptop would be preferred.

Thanks,

These are brand new cat 6 Ethernet cables. I have even tested the Ethernet cable supplied by the engineer this morning but there is still no difference

hub in modem mode.
1 Ethernet surface pro connected to Ethernet port on the hub. Nothing else

and the results are below

I have even fully ruled out the Ethernet port on the laptop. These are Speedtest done through a usb 3 to gigabit Ethernet port adapter
