Slow Ethernet Speeds

Hello,

Around a week ago we had Virgin Media VIVID 200 package installed to our household.

The speed is absolutely amazing on mobile speedtests, pulling anywhere from 200 to even 260!

However, I seem to only be getting 9mbps on my desktop pc despite it being connected via Ethernet.

But if I go to the propities of the wifi adapter.

Some help would be great.

Thanks,
Toby

Re: Slow Ethernet Speeds

what version of windows/operating system on the desktop PC?, since if its a bit older might only have a 100Mbits/sec network card

to rule out some possibles if put the desktop into safe mode with networking -> https://support.eset.com/kb2268/?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US and re-test speed

Re: Slow Ethernet Speeds

Try a new Cat6a ethernet cable - they can fail. Has a friend or neighbour got a laptop that you could get them to test a wired connection with?

Re: Slow Ethernet Speeds

Re: Slow Ethernet Speeds

Ah... That to my mind means its more likely to be the problem. I would buy a long run of Cat5e cable and wire the pc up directly to the Hub (temporarily) and test the connection - that would prove if the existing cable is at fault. 20m of Cat5e cable is <£5 on eBay.

Re: Slow Ethernet Speeds

well for a start your piccy shows that your wifi adapter is only 100mbps and not a 1000mbps one (so you will never get more than ~80-90mbps). And so I would bet its 2.4GHz only. My Macbook Air easily gets 220mbps on my 5GHz network but sat in the same place if I put it onto the 2.4 network it drops to 70-80 mbps - just limitations of the technology.
I would get a new gigabit wifi adapter capable of 5GHz and with decent antennae and see how that performs.
