Self-Install 1Gig - Old 10db Attenuator - Levels - Critical log entries

Hi,

I was using a Super Hub 3 (on the M500 broadband package) for several years and just moved up to 1Gig and so also had the necessary bump up to a Super Hub 5 (SH5).

My cable connected to my Super Hub 3 had a 10DB Forward Path attenuator (FGTC11394) , on the rear it says 'technetix' and so I left it on the cable which I have connected to the SH5, I have a ZenWifi XT8 router (next to SH5) and ZenWifi XT8 node (upstairs). I've switched the SH5 to Modem Mode, using the Mesh network for household WIFI.

The ZenWifi WIFI software has OOKLA - Speedtest embedded into it and when run It seems to be fluctuating between Download of 900Mbps ish to 1080Mbps and Upload of 56Mbps to 103Mbps).

I've read in an older post that the power for the downstream should be between -6 and 10 but I can't find an official definition for this, so if someone could please have a squiz at this information and tell me if the attenuator is necessary or should I at least test without it that'd be great thanks... Also there's a few critical log entries that I am suspicious of...

I installed the new SH5 26/08/2023 15:23:22 as you can see in the logs below, all of the information that I've listed below was taken around 29/08/2023 03:00, I've gone through all of the tabs in the SH5 - Advanced Settings > Network status page.

I've seen others Upstream bonded channels details and my Power (dBmV) seems a bit on the high side doesn't it? Like 10x what others are showing!

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

The Power and SNR all look fine.

What is not is the Upstream Modulation of QAM 16, this should be QAM 64

Call 0800 561 0061  to see if there is a known noise issue in your street.


Signal Level Checks

Via http://192.168.0.1/ connect to the Hub, do not login in, scroll down to "Check router status"

Using the Hub's "Check router status" tabs check the Downstream and Upstream power levels are in spec.

Downstream Power Levels of -7 to +7 dBmV are preferred, +10dBmV is the max acceptable, with a SNR of 33dB or higher across all DOCSIS 3.0 channels. Rising error counts across many channels is a current service noise fault.

Upstream
Power Levels of 35 to 49 dBmV are preferred, with QAM 64 Modulation mode across four to six DOCSIS 3.0 channels.  Seeing QAM 32/16 is a current service noise fault.

Just rang that number and an automated message basically said there are still intermittent problems in your area and engineers are on the case, but it's proving a bit complex so might take a while.

Downstream of 0 dBmV is the optimum power level, upstream is within spec (a forward path attenuator only affects the downstream). VM do not publish the stats figures, but they can be obtained from the DOCSIS specifications. Just check the upstream when the area fault is fixed.
