Router Mode vs Modem Only Mode (with third-party router)

I've got my UDMPro as the network router. Working well. Normally have the Hub in Modem only mode, again works well.

New hub5 arrives and the UDMPro recognises the WAN port whilst the Hub5 is in router mode.

What is the benefit of turning the Hub5 to Modem only mode?

I do not have any cables to it (apart from the UDM). My AmpliFi Wifi is not Wifi6, the Hub is, but I want control over DNS which the hub doesnt offer so wont be using the VM wifi...

Shall I just put it in Modem only mode?

Modem mode is very the best option. I also have a UDM-Pro, I have my Hub5 in modem mode using socket 4, the 2.5G one. In the UDM-Pro I have an SPF+ to RJ45 module connected to the Hub5, works very well. Running 2.5.17 firmware on the UDM-Pro, about to update to 3.0.19. Running all Ubiquiti access points, PoE switches, cameras and door camera/bell.

Yes you want the WAN IP to your device you don't want NAT to cause problems you want DDNS to know the IP by interface or else it be the wrong IP you want all your incoming traffic without another NAT blocking it you want uptime you want NAT loopback.

Look, does what you have at the moment work perfectly well for you? If the answer is 'yes' then for f's sake leave it all well alone!

In theory, yes putting the hub into modem mode is the 'best' option, ultimately thought the 'best option' is what happens to work for you.

Best wishes

Hi. I have just joined Virgin with a Hub 5. I have put it in ‘Modem Mode’ and everything works fine when socket 1 on the hub 5 is plugged into socket 9 (rj45) on the UDM. However, it seems that not only is socket 4 is locked out on the Hub 5 (2.5G) when in modem mode but I can not get the spf to work in socket 10 of UDM. I have the same adapter as you. Any thoughts? 🤔

A couple of points, when you use the UDMP socket 10 it gets a different MAC address than socket 9. So you have to turn off the VM hub and then turn it on again so the new MAC address gets registered in the VM CMTS. I am not a home at the moment so cannot check which make of  SPF+ module I have. There have been some posts on the  Ubiquiti board about setting the speed of this port although I do not remember the outcome. What release are you running on? My UDMP 3.1.15, Network app 7.4.162 latest release ones.
