Requesting Wi-Fi in my area

I am Belfast based where Virgin hold somewhat of a monopoly. Due to this I can either get Virgin or just have to deal with slow Wi-Fi. Unfortunately for me, Virgin is not available in my region, however on the other side of the road opposite my apartment (literally 20 metres) it is available.

Does anyone know if there’s a help form I can request or someone I can contact about bringing the connection across the road so I can use the Wi-Fi?

I’m looking to get the GIG1 package as I need fast speeds for working from home and the streaming of video games that I do in my spare time.

Re: Requesting Wi-Fi in my area

Is there any VM infrastructure at your property, e.g. CATV cover at the footpath or nearby?  VM will not dig up roads etc for one property. Have you checked with your neighbours on the same side of the street?

Are there any other suppliers e.g. Openreach available.?

Re: Requesting Wi-Fi in my area

Not too sure as I have just moved here and I’m 19 so not really sure what I’m looking out for haha. Not checked with them but I’m sure they wouldn’t be opposed to having access to better internet. There is access to other providers like Sky, BT, Plusnet, EE, Now Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone but all are max 80 Mbps which is way too slow for what I need. I am currently on Three’s 5G plan which is the fastest available to me at 100 Mbps but it has a low bandwidth so when both me and my roommate are on it it becomes very slow and unstable.

Re: Requesting Wi-Fi in my area

Strange one really, if VM are on one side of a road in the "big smoke" of Belfast, I would have thought it would be all over.  Have a look for Cable-Tel or NTL as well, they are the old infrastructure before VM bought them over.  I would also check with Openreach website as to the status of Full Fibre in the area.

Re: Requesting Wi-Fi in my area

Ye it is odd which is why I was a bit frustrated when I found out. I have the old style cable/ phone lines coming into the apartment (they are scattered all around in the walls)

thanks for your help, do you n on ow what a next step other than openreach could be for me?

Re: Requesting Wi-Fi in my area

If you wait here a day or two a VM Mod will pick this up and do an indepth check hopefully.

You could post a couple of photos of the cables to let VM assess what is going on.?
