Problem getting 5.0 (faster speed) on Windows 8 laptop

Hi,

I've had a new Windows Media fibre broadband connection installed today. The engineer explained to me that you can connect to 2 different speeds:

2.4 - slower but better range

5.0 - faster but shorter range

The 5.0 works fine on my phone and work computer, but my Windows 8 laptop doesn't detect the 5.0 network, only the 2.4 one.

Has anyone else had this issue, and has anyone got any solutions?

Thanks

What is the make and model of the wireless card in the laptop, does it support 802.11ac (5ghz)?

If its an old laptop as tehwolf says it might not be 5GHz enabled. My lad has a 10 year old Samsung one that doesn't so he got a 5GHz USB3 dongle for less than a tenner - and now it does.

Thanks both, You're right - the problem is that the laptop is a bit older and doesn't support 5GHz. I'll get a dongle. Ta 🙂
