You are really not undersatnding this. In modem mode only one LAN port is active at any time and it's the best way to test speeds as you get the top speeds (you are forced to use an Ethernet cable and WiFi is disabled). When you connect a router you need to retest as it does sometimes happen that the router is the cause of a slowdown.

I kinda figured thats how it works, but I was testing in a controlled environment with everything locked off to one connection on my D7000 anyway

PC Spec: i7-9700k with Corsair H150i pro AIO, MSI Seahawk gtx1080ti with AIO, Asrock Phantom 4 mobo, 32gb DDR4-3000mhz, Seasonic Focus Gold 750w PSU, Corsair Obsidian 750D case, Acer X34 100hz Gsync Ultrawide monitor, 20TB storage, D7000 Nighthawk router, Virgin SH3 on 350m package.
