Net speed Issues

Hi,

Package vivid 350

I was getting speeds of 350/38 up until May.

from mid April to current day - Every week our net speeds have decreased over time.

At first it wasn't an issue as we assumed it's probably the mass influx of users and it's probably congestion in the network and we dropped to 280/29 at the start of lockdown.

Then from End of April - mid July we were renovating the whole house and barely had any time to do anything.

As above we finished 2 weeks ago, and we're all starting to get back online with about 15 devices (tablets, netbooks, consoles, desktop, smart tv's)

The speeds have dropped yet again (to around 130-150/38) and it's getting top the point where sister is working from home and gets cut up or disconnected from calls and she lets every know.

I've factory reset the router, checked all cables and the box outside the house, It was re-positioned and made sure all cables are secure, snug and tight.

Internet is stable with the odd hiccups every once in a while

I use a custom setup

SHub 3.0, Edgerouter 4, Ubiquiti NanoHD, Pi-Hole DHCP/DNS, QoS settings in place - Nothing has changed, been touched or messed around with since last year.

I've had uptime on each device for 50+ days and I reboot them once in a blue moon.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Net speed Issues

Your images need authorising before they become visible for general viewing.

What is your connection like with a direct connection using a Cat 5E/6 cable between the Hub and a 1Gbs capable Pc/Mac/Chromebook and no other devices connected ?

It can be difficult diagnosing problems without some basic information.

Have you checked the 'Check Service Status' at the top of the page ?

If nothing is showing try phoning 0800 561 0061, this will tell you of more local issues that may be affecting the area. Be aware that it isn't a manned line.

Go round all the accessible co-ax connections and ensure that they are finger tight.

If everything above is OK we need do some troubleshooting; to start with …

Can you set up a Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) at thinkbroadband.com - this will give you an insight into what is happening with the signal at the other side of the Hub, it will take a few hours to get any kind of trend showing although you can post the link straight away.

Post a link to your BQM on here.

Instructions for posting BQM Link

Under your BQM graph are two links in red.

Click the lower link (Share Live Graph) then click generate.

Copy the text in the Direct Link box, beware, there may be more text than you can see.

On here click the Link icon (2 links chain to the left of the camera icon)

In the URL box paste the link you copied and then click OK - you can post the link straight away.

Then

Can you please

Type 192.168.0.1 (192.168.100.1 in Modem mode) into your browser URL bar and press enter.

When the page appears DO NOT LOG IN but click ‘Check Router Status’.

Copy and paste the contents of the Downstream, Upstream and Network Log tabs onto here, if you get a yellow warning click the Post button again.

A Guru will be along soon to decipher the info.

Re: Net speed Issues

Here's a current speed test. Only about 5 devices on the network atm. https://testmy.net/db/h18BGOYq4

Service status - Good in my area with no issues

Can't do a direct link to the router as my sis is working and I don't want to interfere.I should be able to check when she finishes and post my results asap later.

Other (useless) info: I have the edgerouter4, Raspberry Pi4 Pi-Hole, Ubiquity Nano HD connected to a switch

All devices are on 5Ghz band on the NanoHD AP. None connected on ethernet

Every device gets near enough 100% link speed/connection on floor 2/3 with the 1st dropping to 70-85

At max speed my PS4 Pro when downloading a game would reach 20mb a sec throughput. Downloading 80 gig games would take 45mins. Now its between 4-10 and can sometimes take up to an hour for a 3gig patch

PC Steam would download at 27-35mb a sec. Now it's about 10-15mb on and off with spikes to 30mb a sec.

Playing BattleField 5 on my PC with 32-39 ms ping. I don't have lag or haven't been disconnected in the last 30 games I have played over the last week

Same with Destiny 2 on my brothers PS4 Pro. He's got stable and great connection with no lag.

Snapchat, WhatsApp, YouTube, Netflix, browsing net on all devices is all OK

All the same static IP's are used on Router, AP and Pi-Hole with mac filtering

All the equipment is in the same room when I was getting max speeds and as I've stated before - no settings have been altered or changed.

Re: Net speed Issues

Can you do a couple of speed tests at speedtest.net, these are the tests that VM accept then post links to the results onto here.

For speed tests, only use a direct connection using a Cat 5E/6 cable between the Hub and a 1Gbs capable Pc/Mac/Chromebook and no other devices connected.

Have you set up a BQM yet ?

Re: Net speed Issues

The BQM link is in the first post near the top

forgot this

Item Status Comments

Acquired Downstream Channel (Hz)
139000000
Locked
Ranged Upstream Channel (Hz)
39400099
Locked
Provisioning State

I'll do the speedtest later when I've got time.

Sis said she gets disconnected on calls after the 5 min mark, this doesnt happen on brothers WiFi (vivid 200) when she connected to that network.

Re: Net speed Issues

I disconnected my custom setup and went back to router mode on the SHub 3.0 and booted everyone else off the network

Plugged cat6 cable into my gaming laptop and did 3 separate speed test from speedtest.net like you asked

Here are the results

Speed Test 1
Speed Test 2
Speed Test 3

Surprisingly everything is looking solid from VM side and the SHub from the results.

Like I said before I have a stable connection and reboot once in a blue moon. But I can't figure out why the increments off speed loss over the last 3 months.

Also the BQM has updated with some new info.

Advice would be appreciated from yourself again or anyone.

Thanks again in advance

Re: Net speed Issues

Is your BQM running to your router or the Hub. It is showing all red which to me means the device it is pinging isn't responding to ping or it is powered off.

Re: Net speed Issues

I think it's the router but it's getting blocked by the firewall. I've created a ruleset but it doesn't seem to be working. So l've bypassed my custom DNS and went with cloudfares and the BMQ graph is working when I have my PC running (As of this post it's half red and showing results too).

I think I've found half a solution and that's my AC NanoHD.

When I get a new device or person wants to get into my network I've set it to only have a whitelist cause of the MAC filter.

Only reason I bring this up as I only log onto the AC in rare instances and when I do, I get prompted to update to the latest firmware which I did prior to making this thread asking for help on my issue.

After doing the laptop/ethernet test yesterday and seeing no issue with the SHub (not sure if it's ok or not).

decided to check the AP settings and looking up any issues with the firmware. Someone suggested the last couple firmwares were detrimental and they downgraded to last year's final firmware and avoid the 3 that came out this year.

So I did downgrade and I went from 60-85 to 150-190 - avg of 170mbps

Issue is that I remember this firmware hitting max speeds last year too.

I'm still open to any more suggestions. Thanks again for the replies.
