My Wifi signal seems to be intermittent. Do I need a new modem?

Using a iMacPro the wifi now seems to disconnect perhaps 2 times a day. When my Virgin fibre 200 was new, it never disconnected at all.

Now it even disconnects overnight too, so I have to keep selecting my modem manually.

I am happy to buy a new modem if it means I can get a much more reliable signal.

What hub do you currently have?

That’s the latest hub virgin will offer for your package.

Is it just WiFi dropping?

Do wired connections also drop?

Re: My Wifi signal seems to be intermittent. Do I need a new modem?

I was told years ago that modems wear out. So needing new one every few years. Although this might be a load of rubbish.

The only item cabled to the hub is the V6 box. That cutout a week ago when I was watching TV.

Having a new hub feels like it might fix the problem?

Could be a connection issue if it all drops at the same time

Re: My Wifi signal seems to be intermittent. Do I need a new modem?

The hub test comes back saying everything is ok.

It often seems to happen during the day when I am working and then suddenly realise the wifi is no longer connected, so I have to re-select my modem.

It's hardly a disaster but annoying to have to keep resetting it.

I've restarted the computer so don't think that's the problem.

I could try using an ethernet cable instead and see if that is more reliable.

Will have a try...

Re: My Wifi signal seems to be intermittent. Do I need a new modem?

I have now installed a full time Ethernet cable instead of using wifi for my iMacPro.

So far it has been 100% reliable. So think I have found the problem - and perhaps the solution.

Has anyone heard of the wifi being unreliable on the Hub 3?

I am still happy to buy a new one if this would fix the wifi reliability.

Re: My Wifi signal seems to be intermittent. Do I need a new modem?

Assuming your wired connections are all ok (if they remain so), then getting your own wireless equipment will solve all the wifi issues permanently, and will be transferable to other Hubs and BB suppliers kit should you move supplier.

Either.....

1) Mesh System
2) Wireless router
3) Wireless access points
4) A combination of the above

Depending on your requirements, house layout/construction and of course, budget. £40 will get a decent introductory wireless router and up to £400 will get the Rolls Royce solution of a high-end Router & WAP's or top end Mesh system. You'll want something suitable within that range.
