Modem Mode on the hub 3.0

Hey folks,

I'm changing over from Virgin Business to Virgin Media.

My current setup:

Hitron business router (in modem mode) -> TP-Link C60 Router -> TP-Link 5 port Gigabit Switch -> PC

This works fine. However when switching out the Hitron router to the Hub 3.0 in modem mode (everything else kept the same), the PC does not get an ethernet connection. Wifi from the Router works correctly and connects to the internet, and if I connect the PC directly to the Hub 3.0 there is an ethernet connection with internet.

What am I missing here?

You need to connect any Ethernet devices to either the switch or the C60.

When in modem mode only 1 device (the C60) can be wired direct to the hub.

Re: Modem Mode on the hub 3.0

Thanks bud - the PC is connected to the switch, which is connected to the router, which is connected to the modem. It is the only connection to the modem.

Re: Modem Mode on the hub 3.0

you said "and if I connect the PC directly to the Hub 3.0 there is an ethernet connection with internet."
only 1 ethernet port works when the hub is on modem mode, so did you disconnect the router to do this test?

does the PC work if you connect it via ethernetto the tp-link router?

Re: Modem Mode on the hub 3.0

Ah yes sorry. I disconnected the router for this test and the PC was the only thing connected to the modem at the time. That worked correctly.

Connecting the PC directly to the router via ethernet works correctly.

So looks like the issue is with the switch?

Try this:

  • Disconnect everything from the Virgin Hub and C60 and power both off
  • Power on the Hub only and let it initialise for 5 minutes
  • Connect the C60 to the bottom port on the hub, making sure nothing else is connected to the C60 by Ethernet at this stage
  • Power on the C60 and give it 5 minutes to initialise
  • Then connect the switch and any other Ethernet devices to the C60 only

See if everything works after this and report back.

Re: Modem Mode on the hub 3.0

your troubleshooting has confirmed the issue is with your switch.
your virgin connection would have nothing to do with your switch not working though.

Re: Modem Mode on the hub 3.0

Thanks bud - I will try this when I'm done with work as i'll be offline for a little while.

It does seem to be something to do with the switch - although why the switch would work with one modem and not with another is strange.
