Latency/Ping spiking constantly for last few months

Hi. Yet again the ping of my ethernet connection has been spiking almost all day every day for the last few months (since about mid January). It's made any online gaming impossible because there are often lag spikes of 150ms-1000ms every couple of seconds constantly. I've observed that it only seems to go back to a stable level after about 1am.

I've recently been on the same PC on the same games in a different city but still on Virgin and ping was not an issue there, so its either a problem with this house (unlikely since we've replaced both the virgin hub and the router multiple times but still had the problem), or a problem with the cabling in the road not being able to support the high coronavirus-related traffic.

This is very frustrating since this was a major issue here for 5 years 2013-2018 with no fix provided, but seemed to miraculously fix 2018-2020, but since January seems to have reverted to this constantly spiking state. I should note that, as with the 2013-2018 same problem, download and upload speeds are still mostly fine during this. It's only affecting latency, but in a huge way.

Would it be possible to have cables in the road/local area updated to actually be able to support the traffic? Currently it is impossible to do anything which requires a stable internet connection (mostly online gaming), and has been this way for the last 3 months straight every single day. These constant ping spikes also result in lots of packet losses in online gaming too.

I seem to be having the same issue. Have you set up a broadband monitor?

I did, and surprisingly the spikes seem to have stopped late last night? Strange.

Nope they're still going https://gyazo.com/b29876b1de90bb780c7d8aac580bc668 - This is the kinda stuff im getting all hours of the day except around 1am-5am (at lowest traffic), on a wired connection. That picture is from a test at 8pm on a Monday, it's ridiculously laggy.

Hi, just to comment your pre/post errors are seriously out spec, If you have checked all connections are secure (not over tight) then sadly a tech' visit will be needed.

Here to help! I'm a technician helping out whilst working from home. i am also in the position of helping you save some of your hard earned money, just PM me to find out how,Find out more

Re: Latency/Ping spiking constantly for last few months

Hi Ciaran,

I'm having exactly the same issue, started about 2 weeks ago and the connection is terrible until about 12am/1am - I'm in the Watford area and I've seen similar posts from a lot of London and the surrounding area!

My live BQM:

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/4032c763a3c9ac1036f297b754454c76723000fc

I started a separate post of my issue but haven't heard anything from Virgin yet. I've also started a post for people to post their BQMs to show Virgin where the problem hotspots are: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Networking-and-WiFi/Poor-Connection-High-Latency-Post-BQM-here/...

Re: Latency/Ping spiking constantly for last few months

How could I arrange the visit? I've checked the cables and they seem to be fine. Its gotten even worse in the last couple of weeks
