Is this a scam??

Elderly parent just received a phone call from an 01979 number stating her router was not secure and that she would be disconnected from Internet for 25 days unless she turned off her computer.  The computer was not on.  They wanted to know what color lights were on her router but this is in a different room and she couldn't get there.  They asked if she had an ipad also.  She was getting herself in a state when I called round so I took the phone and disconnected the call as didn't sound right. Are virgin calling people today asking for them to do this??

Re: Is this a scam??

Almost definitely a scam. They spoof the phone numbers and are usually from Call centres in India. There's some great videos on YouTube of them being taken down. They prey on the elderly as they can confuse them and then get access to their computers via VNC/Remote Access.

The answer to your question is no.  Virgin Media don't ring customers from obscure numbers threatening to cut them off.  This subject has quite a lot of coverage on these boards. 01979 is an unused code.

Re: Is this a scam??

It's definitely a scam. The clue is in the word 'elderly'. There is a list out there of elderly people worth trying to scam.

My 95-year old neighbour regularly gets calls from 'Amazon' saying her order has gone awry (she has no internet access) or that she could reduce her phone bills by transferring from BT (she can't).
