Is it my cable modem... I think it is... and how do I get it changed?

A quick history of my setup...

I've recently changed my entire network over to a Unify system after suffering all kinds of issues with a Tp-Link system (the Super-Hub 2 just wasnt cutting it as I have in excess of 50 devices connected to the network).

I had issues over the new year (I had no connection at all on the modem for 8 days!!) and that was the final straw for me... TP-Link OUT Unifi IN! but in the back of my mind was the question "was it the modem?". Also I know that virgin uses VOIP for their phone and I'm getting a crackly line (normally this means I'll get issues soon... 😓)

Today (in fact just under an hour ago) I had a system crash and while the unify system was still running. I did a test (on my 4G mobile) I got the "theres an issue book an engineer" mesage, it was at this point I reset the cable modem (virgin) and BINGO internet was back up! At no point did the lights on the super-hup change colour, they've always been dark blue (as they should be).

I'm a complete novice to networking but love to tinkerand and the more and more I think about it I'm left wordering "was it the modem all along?"

Can someone have a look at my logs from the modem and advise me please?

Just taken off the modem within the last 30 mins

Re: Is it my cable modem... I think it is... and how do I get it changed?

Stats look ok - post up the Network Logs as well.

Also, in the meantime... If you haven’t already, set up a free and secure “Broadband Quality Monitor” to continually monitor the state of your connection and record any true network dropouts , latency issues, packet drops, etc - it will thus allow you to differentiate between those and simple wifi dropouts. It does it 24/7/365 and it keeps a visual record of any/all of your network disconnections, useful data to have to match to the Network logs (in your Hub settings) and also in discussions with VM - note it will take a few hours to start seeing a sensible picture - post up the “link” to the “share live graph” (as per instructions on the TB website) when it starts to develop.

Re: Is it my cable modem... I think it is... and how do I get it changed?

If its going down on an ethernet connection the BQM should record that. It wont report wifi drops.

Try the 0800 561 0061 number to see if there are any known issues in your postcode.

Re: Is it my cable modem... I think it is... and how do I get it changed?

What Unifi equipment are you using? Are you running the Unifi “Network Comtroller” software, this provides lots of helpful information about your system setup. I have a lot of experience with Unifi USG, UDM Pro, Cloud Key 2+, Protect and camera, USW and UAPs.

Re: Is it my cable modem... I think it is... and how do I get it changed?

I have a USG with cloud key attached, a central 8 port switch with 3 links going to 5 port switches (all netgear gigabit) and 2 APs.

I did check the controller logs but nothing was listed but do get latency issues reported sometimes over WiFi (typical figures are 30-60, my TP-LINK reported over 100 a little too often for my liking). Also is wasn't the WiFi going down but the whole network, cabled connections were offline too.

I changed the network link from modem to USG with a new cat6 one when I changed the system over to unifi (I'm fact I changed ALL the cabling to cat6) as some of the cat5 was definitely getting past its use by date.

The thing that makes me feel its the modem is when I power down (just the modem) then power back up everything is OK... Its only done it twice today and since changing over to unifi this is my only occasions. But in the past my kids would sometimes have to reset everything (modem and tp link gear) 2-3 times a day.
