Is MAC filtering failing or am I getting it wrong?

I am aiming to manage my WiFi better for security and performance. I want to restrict devices to use either 2.4GHz or 5GHz and also block some devices I don't recognise.

I navigate to advanced settings / security / wireless mac filtering scrolling down to the MAC filtering section and select Allow at the check box, then select the device I want to allow which populates the entry box then Add Rule and Apply Changes. The devices get blocked - this is not what I wanted,

Anything I try in the MAC Filtering menu under the main Security menu has no effect, the manual is not helpful - any suggestions?

Re: Is MAC filtering failing or am I getting it wrong?

change the wifi password and only give it to the people you want to have access.

split the 2.4 and 5ghx SSID and connect to the one you want the device to use

Mac filtering is so easy to spoof its not security
