Intermittent broadband. Slow speeds to most destinations.

Hi,

I really hope that someone can help me with the below issue.

London Sw17 Tooting area.

The issue was first noticed yesterday in the afternoon.
I’m watching online content and recently it’s a completely nightmare - 2-3Mbps download speeds to the online TV streamer. UK mainland 10-40Mbps, international servers 1-30Mbps. It takes also much longer than usual to open any Web page. eBay and all other applications are taking longer to load.
All test done, cables checked and hub rebooted. It doesn’t matter if it’s wired or wireless connected device I have the same slow speed issue on all of them.

Please have a look at the below screenshots.

Re: Intermittent broadband. Slow speeds to most destinations.

Your connection is a disaster.

You have way too many pre and post rs errors.

Your upstream power is too high and the wrong modulations.

And you have a nasty load of packet loss, I'm surprized it works at all.

You need and engineer to correct this.

Re: Intermittent broadband. Slow speeds to most destinations.

Hi risc19,

Thank you for your reply.

A month and a half ago when I requested my contact to be cancelled I had an engineer visit but guess what a day before his visit my signal levels jumped from -5 to plus 10 and on the day of the visit the engineer couldn’t find any issues. Two weeks later my broadband power levels dropped down again to minus -2. My upstream power levels have been over 50 for the last 2-3 years but the broadband was working just fine. My hub was changed a year ago. The engineer who came a year ago when I had a troubles with the broadband told me that the whole network in my area is completely mess. When he opened the metal cabinet next to my property all the cables and splitters just fell off over his legs.

He promised that the problem will be escalated and the network in my area will be optimised but I don’t think that this is the case here.

Re: Intermittent broadband. Slow speeds to most destinations.

I am not surprised by any of that at this point.

You have 2 options the way I see it...

1. Wait here and hope VM pull their finger out and get on it.

2. If it is an option in your area, change suppliers.

Update: Now I am sure that the problem is not local because after I did some speed tests using random destinations I find out that my connectivity to a specific servers (I found only two for now) is fine for example “Three Ireland” and “31173 Services AB London”in the same time VirginMedia Ireland and another 50 of the closest servers showing speeds between 10 and 40Mbps.

This looks like interconnect issue or traffic shaping.

I will definitely need someone from VM team to have a look at this please.

 Thank you

Re: Intermittent broadband. Slow speeds to most destinations.

Hi apcyberax,

Thank you for your post.
As I already mentioned, I’m getting the same results no matter if I do the test on my Windows Pc or my MacBook or my phone. Wired or wireless connected doesn’t make any difference. And as you can see from the above screenshots I’m doing the test with my phone now getting the same results over and over again. Only the both servers mentioned above are providing full 100Mbps speed - every single time/test.
As requested please find my test results from samknows.com

Download: 9.48Mbps

Upload: 10.3Mbps
