Intermittent Wi-Fi at times.

Hi all,

Been with virgin a few years but just thought I'd make an account. We upgraded last month to a new contract (500mb Oomph bundle).

When it comes to the internet, I've been having issues. It was okay before the upgrade to be fair, but after, it can sometimes just have issues, very short I may say.

I have had devices disconnect from the internet and reconnect, I've had devices say they're connected but not actually load any webpage or anything, and when using my PC for gaming on Wi-Fi, I have had packet loss nearly every day. Again, none of this happened before.

Not sure if this has anything to do with the fact we had a splitter due to the 2nd V6 box that came with the contract? I did try tighten all the connections up but still didn't help.

Thank you
Ji

Re: Intermittent Wi-Fi at times.

The problem with Wi-Fi is that it can be brilliant at breakfast time and useless by lunchtime and you haven't changed anything, BUT, something, somewhere has changed, then you can spend hours and even days trying to find a fix for something that can be totally out of your control.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If you remove all the internal walls, water, electronic and electrical devices, metallic pipes and conduits and wrap the whole building in a thick lead shield you will have a good chance of getting decent Wi-Fi from an ISP Hub.

Just a few things that can affect Wi-Fi in the average home …

Mirrors, furniture, fish tanks, people, radiators, walls (some more than others), flooring / ceilings, cordless phones, baby monitors, microwave ovens, fridges & freezers, TVs, next doors Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi equipment, DAB transmitters, the list is endless.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Many people have accepted that the VM Wi-Fi is poor and have purchased third party equipment that is much, much more powerful than the VM supplied kit and once set up have wondered why they waited for so long.

Could you access your router using http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.100.1 for modem mode . You shouldn't need log in, select the 'Check Router Status' option and paste your 'Downstream', 'Upstream', and 'Network Log' tabs? Please copy/paste this data as text, split between multiple posts (Sometimes you have to click 'Post' twice due to an error message).

Could you please create a BQM (Broadband Quality Monitor) here, and post the live link?

To be fair, everything looks ok to me, but the packet loss and disconnect is only for a few seconds at random times so i doubted anything would show up.

Re: Intermittent Wi-Fi at times.

Can you set up a Broadband Quality Monitor (BQM) at thinkbroadband.com - this will give you an insight into what is happening with the signal at the other side of the Hub, it will take a few hours to get any kind of trend showing although you should post the link straight away.

Post a 'Live Link' to your BQM on here.

Instructions for posting BQM Link

Under your BQM graph are two links in red.

Click the lower link (Share Live Graph) then click generate.

Copy the text in the Direct Link box, beware, there may be more text than you can see.

On here click the Link icon (2 links chain to the left of the camera icon)

In the URL box paste the link you copied and in the ‘text to display’ box write My BQM then click OK - you can post the link straight away.

Re: Intermittent Wi-Fi at times.

Hopefully Done it correct.

Do I have to leave the web page open and also leave my PC on? That's the device I've used although the intermittent WiFi happens on all devices.

Re: Intermittent Wi-Fi at times.

Everything looks ok on the B, which is annoying, but my PC disconnected earlier on completely and my mother said that the iPad stopped playing videos and ended up buffering for about 15 seconds.

Weird.

Re: Intermittent Wi-Fi at times.

Yes it is monitoring OK.

No as long as the Hub is switched on the BQM will record, everthing else can be switched off / closed.
