Login to the Virgin Media online account and check the Web Safe settings.
VPN operates fine for use with :
Virus Safe : Enabled
Child Safe: Disabled - When Enabled this settings blocks VPNs / Teleconfs / Messenger Apps via DNS redirection

You need to use hub in modem mode and get your own router with 1Gb ports

For some customers the VM settings for Child Safe can be set to OFF but continue to remain Enabled.
Check if this is the case, can you access the websites of Ladbrooks and Beretta ?
If not try changing the computer to use a Public DNS like Google DNS 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
