Hub settings with switch

Hi All,

Looking for some advice, I have a number of devices that I like having connected via ethernet to achieve maximum performance meaning I have had to purchase Netgear Nighthawk S8000 switch for additional ports

Do I need to change the settings within the hub for it to work correctly as I have noticed some issues

I have connected port 1 of the hub to port 8 of the switch as per instructions and then connected the rest into the switch.

I noticed that when streaming a 4K film it constantly buffers but if I connect the ethernet direct to the hub it does not buffer.

Any ideas what would cause this?

(download speeds are pretty stable at 100MB)

Re: Hub settings with switch

The Netgear is a managed switch which needs a setup. I suspect that this is not what you want, so an unmanaged switch is more suitable. See my sig for an example of such a switch.

Re: Hub settings with switch

That’s quite annoying as the S8000 was relatively expensive in comparison.

Is a managed switch not beneficial? I think I purchased this as I read that QoS function is helpful

At the moment the following need connectivity

xbox one x

panasonic fz802

denon AVR-x3500

virgin v6

hive heating

wifi extender

Re: Hub settings with switch

Most home setups need an unmanaged switch, just plug and play with nothing to configure or go wrong.

Re: Hub settings with switch

Thanks.

I notice you have a Archer C8, is this a router that you use and place the hub into modem mode? Do you see much improvement from this?

I was wondering if I should sell the S8000 and just get a new Router with more ports?

Re: Hub settings with switch

Yes, I run in modem mode. Most routers have at most four ports, so get a switch. My C8 is a solid mid-range router.

Re: Hub settings with switch

As I’m already getting 100MB download speeds would I gain much by purchasing an additional router?

Re: Hub settings with switch

Depends if you want the better wifi coverage and more features in a router such as QOS, VPN, more linear firewall control etc.

Re: Hub settings with switch

I thought that’s what the switch would do.

I have connected all back to the switch now and watched a 4K film and seemed “okay” so now I’m not sure what to do 😒

Is it worth keeping all hard wired or should the WiFi be able to provide the same performance
