Hub 5 connecting to Surfshark VPN

Hi all, 

I am trying to sure up a bit of security with my vpn and putting all my “smart” home devices onto my guest network as I understand this adds another layer of security for the main network and the devices connected to it.

my question is whether or not the Hub5 can have VPN settings connected to it and if it’s specifically compatible with Surfsharkd wire guard for which I will need a “key pair” 

any advice is greatly appreciated

There is not an option to install any kind of software or other products on a VM Hub.

So for added security would it work to by another router - change the hub 5 to modem mode and then add the vpn to the third party router?

Ah now if you have the VM pods then putting the hub into modem mode, immediately turns them into doorstops. The VM pods will only work if the hub is in standard ‘router mode’ with the default configuration.

so that would mean a requirement for a mesh network. 

are the pods secure and would they boost both the  guest network and standard network or would i have to pick which to boost. 

not that the pod I have right now is enough

These are quite basic questions, are you clear the real risk of IoT devices is not the traffic over the internet it is the firms' back end systems containing your patterns of life such as when you are at home from when lights are on/off, when heating is on / off etc.

As you have a VM Pod it can be tested to see if it repeats the Guest Network. ( my hunch is not )

Folks have reported plenty of issues connecting 2.4Ghz IoT devices to the Hub 4 & 5's Wi-Fi using a Guest network only expands the range of possible issues to encounter on a Wi-Fi service that offers the bare minimum of configuration controls. i.e On / Off / SSID / Password & that is about it.

Agree with @Client62  about the basic ISP kit.

If you need to install a VPN and isolate your IoT, then use modem mode and a decent router.  Draytek routers allow for VPN installation and also VLANS to segregate network traffic.  There are other equally good routers as well e.g. Unifi.  Adding decent PoE access points will also give good wifi distribution, with some units allowing for seamless roaming etc.
