How many connected devices are allowed on Hub 3 router?

PDS123
Tuning in

I have c. 50 devices (mix of smart bulbs, Alexas, smart plugs, iPads, computers, etc) and I can no longer add additional smart home devices via either the Virgin Media router or an Airport Express Base Station (1st Generation) + two further Airport Express devices on a separate home network but connected via Ethernet to the Virgin hub.

Is there a maximum number of devices allowed on Virgin's Hub 3 including those connected in addition and presumably cumulatively via a connected separate wifi network as indicated above?

Thank you for any assistance offered!

dont download anyting. the video is just for watching.

You might not of done anything but if your on windows 10 and updating through windows updates might of caused a problem.

the 10/10 indicates a problem with the network card your side.

my advice would be to open up device manager, right click the network adapter and press uninstall.
make sure you have the net work drivers downloaded to re-install

Thanks, but why would it have a problem running at 100mbps with 350mbps service when it's ok with 100mbps?

i have just downloaded and installed the updated drivers direct from the realtek website. same problem.

When i was sold the "upgrade", i was assured that the "only difference you'll see if faster speeds and no dropouts".

Again, what would my 84 year old mother be doing at this stage? On the phone to Sky already i reckon!

has your pc got onboard ethernet and a pcie card?

The upgrade that virgin has done will not cause your problem.

if the pc is getting 10/10 still after uninstall/reinstall you have a problem.
if the laptop is still connecting at 85 on the long cable your issue is with the pc / network card.

the only other thing i can reccumend is safemode with networking

if the speed is still 10/10 -> then for testing purposes buy somthing cheap like this to bypass your ethernet card - this should achive close to your 350.

just seems odd that the day I get upgraded is the day my wired connection drops

these things do happen, got to be patient with troubleshooting.

the little dongle i provided will bypass the ethernet card and should give close to your 350 connection on any device you connect it to and for £10 cant complain.

just an heads up for virgin to give any of the answers above they will want you to join there gadget suppport which costs £60.

isit still only your pc failing to achieve anything above 10? the hub cant be at fault if everything else is working normal.

did you manage to sort it? did you grab one of the usb adapters to try?

I plugged a wireless adaptor in. I'm still only getting 20mbps cos the wireless from the router can't cover the house but it'll do until sky can replace the system sometime next month. I'm not staying with VM and paying over £1000 a year when they can't keep their products working and offer no support when they fail.

Thanks for your help guys, but this is down to VM and they're not interested in fixing it.

@adrianjacobs I’m sorry but you absolutely cannot conclude that this is a VM problem, you have yourself said that if you connect an old laptop to the cable then you get 85 Mb/s which means that the VM hub and cable can support faster than the 10 you are getting on the PC. Whats’s limiting the laptop is almost certainly that it only has a 100 Mb/s Ethernet card in it.

So why can the laptop get 85 but your PC only get 10? The PC’s card has decided to negotiate speeds of no more than 10 Mb/s.

The most likely explanation is that the network card in the PC has died.

OK, let's recap.

Over the previous 6 months I was being plagued by dropouts.

At about the 5th time of calling because of the constant, intermittent drop outs, I was told by VM that my 100mbps kept failing because I was using more than 8 devices connected at the same time. Turned out to be an outright lie.

I was sold an upgrade at additional cost, and assured it would have no effect other than to increase my speeds and stop the dropouts. The same moment that the upgrade was implemented, my pc speed dropped from 100mbps to less than 10.

The engineer subsequently sent out to resolve any issues and to thoroughly check out my system was "not trained on cables" and couldn't check that side of the system out.

There are other companies out there that will take my £1000 a year and will, hopefully, offer a decent service (and Sky Atlantic. I'll give them a try.

if all your devices are not up to date to achieve gigabit speeds your move to sky wont fix anything.

My focus was on the PC regarding the 10/10 link speed.

if your wifi adapter is usb - have you tried it on the old laptop closer to the hub?

If you have an up to date mobile device that can see 5ghz try doing a speed test to see if it goes close to your 350.
