Cannot access Cloudflare DNS

We've just had broadband installed and I noticed that my mobile was saying that it had no internet when most of my other devices did. As I use my mobile on hotspots I make sure I have Private DNS set which uses 1.1.1.1 but it seems when I'm connected to my new home broadband I cannot reach 1.1.1.1.

 

Anyone know why? Is there a setting that I need to set? I don't want to have to change the settings on my phone every time I come home.

Hi Alessandro,

 

Thank you for coming back to me.

 

A bit more further testing done and I think it's not 1.1.1.1 that's the issue but reaching 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare.dns.com.... which is essentially the same thing, maybe the issue is accessing different ports as the Android uses DNS-over-TLS (port 853).

 

I will do some further testing when I get home.

OK, so it seems that because Virgin Media pass off incorrect website addresses to a third party to provide search results it causes issues with using DNS-over-TLS or at least it did for me.

 

Once I opted out of "Advanced Error Search" at https://my.virginmedia.com/advancederrorsearch/ I was able to put my phones Private DNS on. The thread I found that assisted me was https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Forum-Archive/Advanced-DNS-Opt-Out/m-p/3575809#M1922235.
