Can't connect laptop to internet with ethernet cable

Houston, we have a problem (again!)

I don't seem to be able to connect my laptop to the internet with an ethernet cable. It keeps defaulting to Wifi and, when I try to set up a cable connection, I get asked for a  user name and password - neither of which I know. I have never encountered this problem before when trying to connect with a cable.

Please can you advise what I need to do to connect with an ethernet cable? Do I really need a user name and password? Surely not?

Thanks.

Reboot the hub.
Failing that factory reset it.

Try a new Cat5e or better ethernet cable. Old one may have failed?

Thank you Gary. It's been a long, hard slog, but I think you might just have nailed it. Kudos to you, amigo.
