Awful broadband speed

Hi can anyone help please!

My son was complaining about the internet speed. I replied we were on approx 200mb broadband which I pay over £60 per month for. He said on his Xbox he was getting max 10mb/sec... which I laughed at.

Ive looked and 10mbps is generous. It’s usually 3-4. I’ve tried using an Ethernet. Opening ports. Rebooting the modem. No problems in the area.... Nothing....

The online speed test puts me at 21.7mbps with a 21.4mbps upload speed! Why is it so low?

Re: Awful broadband speed

How are the speed tests being conducted?

Wired or wirelessly?

Re: Awful broadband speed

You need to run a wired speed test with a gigabit-enabled device using a CAT5e/6/7 cable to ascertain the actual speeds being delivered to your hub.

Wireless is not a way of doing this properly.

Re: Awful broadband speed

I appreciate that Gary. However, when I clicked the Ethernet cable into the router and Xbox. The speed didn’t improve at all.

Re: Awful broadband speed

1st. - Superhub 3 have poor range. If you want to get a better speed try to check your speed near your router.

2nd. if you separate the bands (2.5Ghz and 5Ghz) Check your speed with 5Ghz band.

3rd. Like everyone else, buy your own router and use superhub like modem.

And last, Welcome to the Virgin Media...

Re: Awful broadband speed

Speedtesting on a console is never going to give accurate results, even with a cable.

Re: Awful broadband speed

Agree, I will test again wired tomorrow.

I can guarantee it’s nowhere near my advertised ‘average’ speed though. The Xbox connection will defo give me an indication

Re: Awful broadband speed

It won’t.

You need to use a laptop or equivalent with a gigabit Ethernet port.

Console speed tests usually ping you off to somewhere in the USA
