Advice around boosting wireless strength after building work

Hi all,

We're currently on the Ultimate Volt bundle with Virgin Media and getting download speeds of 1146 Mbps at the Hub, and around 222 Mbps when testing WiFi speed in the same room.  Obviously this dips in other areas of the house but generally, the speed has been acceptable enough to not cause us any problems for the most part.  However, we have had a side extension built this year and speeds have been problematic in the new rooms - our Hub is in the living room and the rooms are on the other side of the hallway, on the other side of our previously external brick wall.

After much difficulty in requesting a WiFi Pod (couldn't get any connection through VM Connect to verify that we had no connection!), we managed to get hold of one a couple of months ago and this seemed to provided enough of a boost to allow us to work largely without issue in the extension.  However, our children are now trying to stream games through a new TV in one of the rooms and clearly this is pushing the boundaries of the speeds we can achieve in the extension.  On a latest test today, we're only getting 17 Mbps in that room, even though the WiFi Pod is in there too.

I'm not sure we're eligible for another Pod as apparently that speed is still 'great' (even though it is under the 30 Mbps guarantee?) but from what I've read online the Pods probably aren't ever going to get us brilliant speeds.  As such, I'd be grateful for any advice around whether there are solutions I can pursue through Virgin or via additional third party mesh hardware that might enable us to maintain better speeds across the house.  I consider myself fairly tech savvy but it's not an area I'm massively familiar with, so any third party solutions would need to be straightforward!

Thanks in advance.

Pods MUST be equal distance from the VM hub and not in the same room, unless they are Ethernet wired back to the hub. If you think about it, the pod in the same room as device would be getting the same strength signal as the device.

As Tudor says, try "resiting" the Pod(s) - you are eligible for up to three.

If they dont help - see this...

If you do want to invest in better equipment, you would need to get either a… (1) Mesh System, (2) Wireless router, (3) Wireless access point(s), (4) a pair of good quality Wifi Powerline Adaptors, or a combination of (2&3).

£40-150  should sort it for most customers with an average property and usage. Spend more for additional advanced“features” - if required.

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & TNT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi), Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's & TP-Link Archer C64 WAP. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

Thanks both, very helpful. Think I may have jumped the gun slightly as speeds have been much better since the other day, so perhaps impacted by the storms? Anyway, will keep an eye on things and look to reconfigure things if needed.

Hey @danblade1 Thanks for reaching out to us and a warm welcome to the Virgin Media Community forums. 👋🏼

I'm sorry to hear about the issues with the signal you've recently had.
It is possible that poor weather plays a factor in connection stability and speed.
In future you can refer to our service checker here for any notice of issues and outages in the area.

Reach out to us if you have any other queries and we'll assist.

Kind regards,
Ilyas.
