Adding Ethernet switches to my Hub 5

Hi all, I am a newbie to the VM Forum.

I have the VM Hub5 with over 500GB download speed. I am looking into running a new network in my home. Starting with a 16-port ethernet switch. This is purely for expansion purposes reasons, along with the Cat8 cabling.

Please see my plan image below, along with the questions I have. Thank you

The questions I have are:

  • Is this plan feasible to run with the hub5?
  • I've looked at many 16 port switches such as TP-Link+poe, Yuanley, Netgear, Goalake, and TRENDnet to name but a few. Are any of these usable with the hub5, I am aware certain routers are better to use specifically with VM routers.
  •  Am I better to use the hub5 as a Modem for all switches and then add a WiFi router to supply my wireless devices? If so, can anyone provide the make and model, please?

I know this is a lot of information, and I do appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thank you

Yep, managed and unmanaged switches are fine to use with a HUB.

Behind my HUB 5, in modem mode, I have:

  • Two Asus routers, one in router mode and one in AP (AiMesh) mode.
  • Three switches, two unmanaged, and one managed.

You will not be able to run modem mode with many MAC devices by a simple switch if you want you can get a home NAT router then connect switches to it the hub in router mode should allow you to use switches but if it don't work out get a router.

I use my hub in modem mode with Zyxel gear but have Cisco and Netgear switches

Thank you, Alessandro Volta; I think I know what you mean; Are you using Managed or Unmanaged? I have seen ZyXel brand.

I will look into this……cheers.

I have a similar setup of switches as you, but I have a number of wired cameras as well. I use a Ubiquiti router, a UDM-Pro that is just a router and does not supply WiFi. For WiFi I use Ubiquiti AC Pro WAPs. All switches are fully managed by the free Ubiquiti software as are the Cameras and WAPs.

I use Managed but likely you only need Unmanaged unless you want to do ACL and VLANs with a VLAN router

Hi Carl, thanks for your info on what you use and what I can use.  I might want to pick your brains more if that's ok?

Tudor, thank you very much for your insight; I have heard of Ubiquiti and will check out their various routers/switches.

Sure. I'm no network engineer, however might be able to assist on basics.
