Cancel a PAC code transfer

I bought a new phone and plan from another provider (VM did not have the phone model i wanted), requested and received a PAC code to pass on to the new provider. 24 hours later i get the new number for the new phone and decide i want to keep it NOT transfer my old VM number over and cancel the contract. I have not activated the new SIM yet as i believe this kicks off the transfer process. Can i prevent the transfer of my number in any way and keep it on VM or do i have to wait 30 days before activating my new phone for the PAC to expire?
