I've done same spent about 2 hours on phone to be told it needs to be done by and IT specialist lol.

Sorry to hear that you have had some issues with your email.
It would be the IT team who will need to remove the original email address so you can register the correct email one.
Are you able to let me know if the team you spoke with over the phone raised an IT ticket?
