Hard search on credit report

I was thinking of getting virgin when my current media runs out, but I have just seen they have done a hard search on my account so now Im having second thoughts. I've never missed any payments or bills in the past, years of history. I think a hard search is absurd for broadband. It has lowered my credit score.
