No contract, no contact, requested to cancel, still getting bills.

My contract has run out, and I'm tired of the bills increasing every year and total lack of customer service and care, so I sent a 30 day notification letter that they have to cancel my services, by signed for and recorded delivery (also sent to myself) but I have not received any response, the letter was sent a month ago, instead virgin keep telling me they are adding more channels, are increasing my bill, and now have sent me a late payment charge of £7.50!!! a bill that was originally less than £30 is now upwards of £60!
Please can can someone on here help me, as its impossible to get through to virgin on the phone and when I do they flat out refuse to let me leave even with no contract, i will be going legal and public if this is not resolved fast!!!
