Incorrect subscription

When on the phone to VM i inadvertently pressed the wrong button thereby committing me to the sports package at £22/month. How can I cancel this before the contract arrives?

I’ve also received the contract via email and the new bill has now appeared in my account.

Yes, I was put through to a very pleasant and efficient agent inCustomer Relations who resolved the matter immediately. Initially Customer services insisted I gave 30 days’ notice. Should there have been a cooling off period in a contract?

Glad to hear that you have been able to get through and get things sorted. Yes, contracts do come with a cooling off period, however if it's only an amendment to an existing contract such as adding a Sports or Movies, the cooling off would not apply since it;'s not a new contract, only an ammendment.
